Zurich
The small villas embrace the space along the neighborhood street and thus assert themselves against the four-story buildings in the immediate proximity. At the point where a mighty cedar tree stands, the row opens up and gives way to the central, communal garden, which provides access to all eleven houses. The volumetry of the two house types is reminiscent of the villas that were built along the street at the end of the 19th century. They are broken up into projecting and set-back, one to three-storey volumes, giving them a surprisingly slender and elegant appearance. The tower-like accentuation of the stairwells marks the entrance to the individual buildings. The challenges lie in the façade with its high-quality exposed brickwork and concrete elements. In addition, there is the rocky excavation for the complete basement of the site with a parking garage and the trees that need to be protected in the narrow inner-city location.
