Cham
As the landowner, Cham Immobilien AG intends to gradually convert its factory site, which covers around eleven hectares, to new uses and develop it as a residential and working quarter. Around 1,000 apartments and around 40,000 m2 of service and commercial space are to be built on the former industrial site over a realization period of around 15 years.
The boiler house is the symbolic landmark of the factory, visible from afar. It is of great importance in terms of economic history and as a landmark. The building sections, constructed in two stages, form a composition of cubes, each covered by a strongly projecting flat roof and featuring architectural elements reminiscent of sacred buildings. In terms of architectural history, it is significant in that the elements such as the skeleton construction in reinforced concrete, the infill with cement blocks and the large areas of glazing, which are found in various forms throughout the factory site, are implemented in a contemporary manner in the architectural language of the 1950s.
