The new “Tram Depot” will be built between two five-storey rows of peripheral buildings and will create a precise contextual reference to the heritage-protected residential buildings. With a parking area for 25 tramcars with a length of 43 m and modern operating rooms, the needs of the transport company can be met. The real estate management of the city of Zurich is building 193 apartments with loggias as well as additional commercial units and studio apartments in the new building. The designed outdoor space for the residents is located above the tram depot, flanked by two-storey maisonette apartments (townhouses), which are accessed via an arcade. The two 23- and 24-storey residential towers (68 m) are organized in four columns and comprise 136 rental apartments. Commercial storage rooms, bicycle parking spaces and parts of the building installations are located in the basement. The two high-rise towers will emphasize the gateway to Zurich-West. They thus fit into the silhouette of this booming district and form a convincing ensemble with the two existing towers in the immediate vicinity (“Escher-Terrassen” and “Swisscom-Tower”).
