Zumikon
The Inter-Community School in Zumikon is planning to construct a new school building on the current site of the gymnasium. The aim is to concentrate lessons in one place. Some lessons are currently held in the Schwäntenmos industrial estate. Currently, 810 pupils from 57 nations attend the school, which was founded in 1960.
In the first phase, an extension is planned on top of the existing buildings. This will remove the existing classrooms from the building to be demolished.
The existing buildings are two sports halls. One of them used to be a riding stable. The second, temporary gymnasium, known as the Tiger Dome, will be dismantled once the new building has been completed.
The shape of the new building aims to optimise the use of the available space. It will also create a versatile open space. The new triple gymnasium will be realised between the 1st and 3rd floors. The passerelles connect the new school building with the neighbouring building via the tower staircase.
This project is a challenge for Caretta Weidmann, as it is for all project participants. Many factors such as the complexity of the project, the international nature, the strict deadlines, the construction work during lessons and the safety of the pupils during the construction process had to be taken into account.
